Water is a critical resource for sustained well being of us as a community. Deterioration in water quality and contamination has resulted in increased waterborne diseases and other health impacts. It is estimated that a large number of deaths occur each year due to waterborne diseases. Most of the diseases are infectious waterborne diseases such as Typhoid, Polio and Hepatitis A and B.
Waterborne diseases are responsible for substantial human and economic losses. These include the loss of millions of working hours of productivity annually, and associated costs for health care. Some of us use bottled water, however there are few considerations;
¤Are you sure you are buying the right brand? In a survey conducted by Pakistan Council Of Research. In Water Resources 22 out of 58 commercially available brands were found unsafe due to chemical or bacteriological contamination (source Quarterly Monitoring Report of Mineral/Bottled Water October – December 2005).
¤Bottled Water is expensive Your water needs depend on factors, such as your health, how active you are and where you live. It is estimated a daily need of 5 liters of water per person. On average 1.5 liters bottled water costs Rs. 25 based on that it costs you Rs. 2,500 for a month and Rs. 30,000 for a year. On a average household of 5 person it costs Rs. 150,000 for the family per year. ¤Environmental Impact such as energy used in manufacturing process, amount of Co2 produced to make PET bottle, effects on water resources, solid waste, recycling and the list goes on.
Some of us misunderstand Bottled Water with Mineral water . According to International Bottled Water Association code of practice “Mineral Water” means water containing not less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids, coming from a source tapped at one or more bore holes or springs originating from a geologically and physically protected underground water source. No minerals may
be added to this water.
